Balje is located on the Lower Elbe, where the Oste river flows into the Elbe and the river opens up to the North Sea. The village belongs to the municipality of Nordkehdingen in the Stade district and has fewer than 1,000 inhabitants. All around are marshes, dikes, salt marshes teeming with birds, and a sky that stretches to the horizon. It's important to know that the landscape is flat and open. Those who love this vastness will feel at home here.

A landmark of the village are its two lighthouses, which stand right next to each other: the large, red one that is in use today, and the smaller, older one. From the dike, you can spend hours watching cargo ships and cruise ships heading towards Hamburg and the North-East Sea Canal. The Elbe Cycle Route runs directly past the village.

Nearby: the Natureum Niederelbe, with its coastal museum and coastal zoo, the Ostesperrwerk (a flood barrier), the small marina with a lock, and Gut Hörne, with its café. You can take the Elbe ferry from Wischhafen to Glückstadt, and if you're looking for even more open space, you can travel to Otterndorf or to the North Sea beaches of Cuxhaven-Duhnen and Döse.

There is a kindergarten and a primary school in the village. For larger purchases, doctors, and specialty shops, you need to travel to the nearby neighboring villages. For many, it is precisely this tranquility that is the reason to move here.
